Complete Studio Philosophy
Creating an environment that is conducive to learning is essential in a private studio. Because lessons take place in a one-on-one or small group setting, it is especially important to foster open and effective communication between the student and teacher. I encourage this through regular check-ins with students and, when appropriate, parents, ensuring that all feel comfortable sharing questions, concerns, or goals. No question is too small or unimportant, and communication is central to growth.
Equally important is ensuring that students feel safe, supported, and respected during their lessons. In a private studio, this means creating a space where students can take risks, make mistakes, and grow without fear of embarrassment or judgment. we emphasize respect for the learning environment and for each student’s individual pace, background, and musical interests. We strive to lead by example through a calm, encouraging, and professional demeanor.
We strongly believe in fostering intrinsic motivation rather than relying on external rewards. Students are encouraged to take ownership of their progress and to find fulfillment in their musical development. Opportunities such as performing in recitals, selecting repertoire, and setting personal goals serve as meaningful incentives that reflect their hard work.
Structure and consistency are key components of RCMA teaching. Each lesson is thoughtfully organized to include technique, repertoire, and musicianship skills tailored to the individual student. Through a balance of discipline and creativity, students develop both technical proficiency and artistic expression.
LEGAL HEALTH
A legally healthy private studio environment is one in which each student’s learning experience is equitable, safe, and supportive. In a private  studio, this includes addressing each student’s emotional, educational, and behavioral needs so they do not interfere with their  development. It is my responsibility to recognize potential challenges and adapt instruction to best support each student’s success.
In a private teaching setting, we maintain a standard of due diligence by ensuring a safe, structured, and supervised environment at all times. This includes being fully present during lessons, maintaining clear studio policies, and creating organized lesson plans. As instructors, we take on a role similar to “in loco parentis” during lesson time, meaning I am responsible for the student’s well-being while they are in my care.
Professional negligence can occur unintentionally, but it is preventable through organization, consistency, and ethical behavior. we prioritize maintaining a safe teaching space, establishing clear expectations, and documenting important communication or concerns when necessary. These practices help ensure accountability and protect both the student and the integrity of the studio.
ETHICS
As  private instructors, our ethical responsibilities extend to my students, the community, and the profession. My primary obligation is to the student, supporting their musical, personal, and artistic growth. This includes providing a safe, respectful environment free from embarrassment, harassment, or undue pressure. I strive to empower students to think independently, explore diverse musical styles, and develop confidence in their abilities.
RCMA's obligation to the community involves teaching in an equitable and unbiased manner. we aim to present musical and artistic knowledge accurately and fairly, allowing students to form their own artistic perspectives. We also maintain professional boundaries, avoiding conflicts of interest and ensuring that all decisions are made in the best interest of the student.
Finally, our obligation to the profession is upheld through continued learning and professional development. Staying current in pedagogical methods allows RCMA instructors to provide high-quality instruction. We also commit to developing diverse and engaging lesson materials, as well as maintaining clear studio procedures that support a productive learning environment.
Ultimately, while developing musical skills is a central goal, RCMA believes that teaching extends beyond music itself. In our studio, we strive to teach the whole person—encouraging confidence, discipline, creativity, and a lifelong appreciation for the arts
